Importing, exporting, and updating Coherence apps

Coherence provides two related tools:

  • Configuration import and export recreates app setups on another Mac.
  • Update Apps… brings existing generated apps forward to the current Coherence generation.

These tools do not replace a backup of important browser data.

Export app configurations

  1. Open Coherence X6.
  2. Choose Coherence > Export App Config…, or select Export from an app’s gear menu.
  3. Search for apps if needed.
  4. Select the apps to include.
  5. Select Export and save the .coherence  file.

Export App Configurations window

Only apps built or updated for the current Coherence generation appear in the export window.

An exported configuration describes how to recreate the app. It can include details such as the app name, primary URL, icon, app type, tabs, engine choice, and applicable configuration selections. It does not contain live browsing data such as cookies, open sessions, cached pages, or browsing history.

Treat .coherence  files as configuration files, not complete app backups.

Import app configurations

  1. Move the .coherence  file to the destination Mac.
  2. Install Coherence X6 and the required browser engines.
  3. Select Import Apps on the home screen, or choose Coherence > Import App Config….
  4. Choose the .coherence  file.
  5. Coherence creates the apps described by the file.

Review imported apps after creation. Browser paths, unavailable extensions, or other machine-specific details may need adjustment on the destination Mac.

Update apps from an earlier version

Created apps contain their own engine and supporting files, so updating the main Coherence application does not always update every generated app immediately.

Coherence X6 may offer to update earlier-generation apps when it finds them. You can also update manually:

  1. Quit the apps you want to update.
  2. Choose Coherence > Update Apps….
  3. Review the list and version status.
  4. Select Update All [number] Apps.
  5. Wait for Update Complete before launching them again.

App Updater with apps requiring an update

Earlier-generation apps may be absent from the X6 app library and export window until they are updated.

Automatic updates

Open Coherence > Settings > App Defaults and enable Automatic App Updates if created apps should be refreshed in the background when Coherence is updated. Keep the manual updater available for migration, troubleshooting, or apps that were not present during an automatic update.

Before updating or moving apps

  • Quit the generated apps.
  • Keep a backup of any important data.
  • Preserve the original .coherence  file until the recreated apps have been tested.
  • Confirm that the destination Mac has compatible browser engines.
