Getting Started with Quip for macOS
System Requirements
Quip for macOS requires macOS 14.0 or later and works on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
Installation
1. Download Quip from the Mac App Store or direct download
2. Launch Quip from your Applications folder
3. Follow the onboarding flow to set up permissions and preferences
Setting Up Permissions
Quip needs several system permissions to work properly. During first launch, you'll be guided through granting these permissions:
Accessibility Access (Required)
- Allows Quip to paste content directly into other applications
- Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility
- Enable Quip in the list
Input Monitoring (Required for Super Shortcuts)
- Enables text expansion and shortcut detection while you type
- Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Input Monitoring
- Enable Quip in the list
Screen Recording (Optional, for OCR features)
- Allows Quip to capture screen content for text recognition
- Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording
- Enable Quip in the list
First Launch
When you first open Quip, the onboarding flow will:
1. Welcome you to Quip and explain core concepts
2. Guide you through permission setup
3. Demonstrate basic clipboard operations
4. Show you how to access Quip from the menu bar
Initial Setup
After completing onboarding:
- Quip automatically starts monitoring your clipboard
- A menu bar icon appears in the top-right corner of your screen
- Press ⌘⌥C to open Quip's main interface anytime
